Res Artis Conference in Montreal, October 6-10, 2010
We would like to remind you that you have until June 30th to take advantage of the early bird registration rates for this conference held in Montreal, October 6-10, 2010. This event will assemble members of the international Res Artis network as well as of the network of Canadian artist-run centres. The conference will be an exceptional opportunity to broaden our contacts and meet our peers from abroad during colloquiums, workshops, cocktails, dinners and openings spread over this busy week. arca will hold a meeting and forum with representatives from its Board as well as from centres throughout Canada and elsewhere to discuss common concerns and to provide updates on our activities. We will also offer a workshop on the use of the Handbook on Management Skills for Artist-Run Centres, published by RCAAQ. Remember that your registration fee includes most meals and cocktails, as well as transportation to some events. You will find the details here.
… and an upcoming conference in Vancouver in 2012
We are pleased to inform you that the next national conference for artist-run centres will take place in Vancouver in the fall of 2012, organized by Fillip Magazine in conjunction with our colleagues of the Pacific Association of Artist-Run Centres. We will keep you posted with developments in the coming months.
Survey on Employment Standards
As you are already aware, we have been busy since last fall working on a survey on employment standards that is a joint undertaking with our colleagues of the Independent Media Arts Alliance. We were planning to publish the results of the survey this month, but we have now decided to postpone the launch until September as we only received the analysis of collected data, prepared by sociologist Guy Gauthier, a week ago. There is still much work to be done on translation, illustration and layout before it can be presented. It therefore seemed appropriate to take advantage of the summer months to finalize the document for presentation this fall. We would like to thank you for your patience and assure you that the wait will be worth it!
_Assistance to Artist-Run Centres_’ Program at the Canada Coucil for the Arts
During our Board meeting in Halifax at the end of May, we met with Mr. Jim Logan, Program Officer for artist-run centres at the Council. We were informed that the proposed changes to the program are rather minimal, and that these changes, including the removal of the maximum amount of $100,000 that has been the norm until now, still need to be approved by the Council’s Board. The revised application form will be available in mid-August. As you are probably already aware, the financial data must entered in CADAC. You can now register your financial data in CADAC, if you haven’t done so already. This would leave you with more time in October to concentrate on the content of your application, and avoid last-minute stress. You will find additional information on CADAC here.
Well-deserved honours for our President Todd Janes
Our President Todd Janes, who is also an artist and the director of Latitude 53 Contemporary Visual Culture in Edmonton, is this year’s recipient of CARFAC’s National Visual Arts Advocacy Award. The award recognizes Todd’s exceptional contribution as an artist and as an initiator of the Visualeyez performance festival. It also acknowledges his commitment to numerous artists and arts funding-related causes, both in Alberta and throughout Canada. It is with pride that we congratulate you, Todd!
On behalf of the Board of arca, I wish you a great summer.
